Milk may contain harmful bacteria causing diseases such as listeriosis, tuberculosis etc. in humans. Pasteurisation is the process of heating milk, which kills these disease-causing bacteria.
Pasteurisation is the process of heating milk up to 161.6-degree Fahrenheit (72 Degree Celsius) for at least 15 seconds, to eliminate these disease-causing bacteria. This process is also used in fruit juices to destroy pathogens present in it and to thereby extend its shelf-life.
This process was discovered by the French scientist Louis Pasteur in 1864.
