The objective of the Industrial Disputes Act 1947 is to secure industrial peace and harmony by providing machinery and procedure for the investigation and settlement of industrial disputes by negotiations.

The 'dispute' or 'difference' according to Section 2 (g) of the Trade Unions Act, 1926 and Section 2(k) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 must be connected with employment or non-employment or the terms of employment or with the conditions of labour of any person.
