The odds against a husband who is 50 years old, living till he is 70 are 7:5 and the odds against his wife who is now 40, living till she is 60 are 5:3. Find the probability that the couple will be alive 20 years hence.

Solution

The odds against a husband who is 50 years old, living till he is 70 are 7:5 Hence Husband will live after 70 years =   5(7 + 5) = 5/12

odds against his wife who is now 40, living till she is 60 are 5:3.

Hence Wife will live after 60 years =   3(3 + 5) = 3/8

he probability that the couple will be alive 20 years hence.

= (5/12). (3/8)

= 15 / 96

= 5/32

the probability that the couple will be alive 20 years hence. = 5/32
