Concept:

  • The odometer of a vehicle reads the distance covered by the vehicle
  • Kinematics
  • Average speed is the rate of distance covered by an object or the distance covered per unit time

Given:

  • The initial odometer reading = 1000 km
  • The final odometer reading  = 1500 km
  • The total time of the trip = 5 hours

Find:

  • The average speed of the car in km/h
  • The average speed of the car in m/s

Solution:

The distance covered = final odometer reading - initial odometer reading

Distance covered = 1500 km - 1000 km = 500 km

Average speed = distance covered/ total time

Average speed = 500 km/ 5 h = 100 km/h

Average speed in m/s = 100 * 1000/3600 = 100*5/18 = 250/9 = 27.7 m/s

The average speed of the car is 100 km/h or 27.7 m/s.
