Ranga had returned to his village after spending six months in Bangalore. He had gone there to improve his education and communication skills in English. The old lady who had come to see Ranga along with the other villagers went away satisfied after ensuring he was wearing the Janewara (the sacred thread worn by Brahmins). After she saw his Jaewara, she was happy that he had not lost his caste.

When Ranga returned to his village after six months of stay in Bangalore to learn English, the villagers thought that he would have become a changed man. One such person was an old woman who sold firewood to Ranga’s residence.

The old woman thought that Ranga would have given up his Brahmin lifestyle. To verify this for herself, she ran her fingers over his chest and felt something. When she looked at what she had felt, she noticed the sacred thread of the Brahmins still worn across his chest. This made her happy that Ranga had not forgotten their social culture and religious values.
