Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said,"I am going fishing." (Direct)

She said that she was going fishing. (Indirect/Reported)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense form. Also, modifications, regarding certain words like 'may' changes to 'might', 'can' changes to 'could', 'yesterday' changes to 'the previous day', 'today' changes to 'that day' and many other words will have to be made.

The old man asked his son,"Why did you spread the news yesterday?" (Direct)

The old man asked his son why he had spread the news the previous day. (Indirect)

Hope it helps :)
