It is assumed that the above statement relates to the story ‘The Old Man at the Bridge’, by Ernest Hemingway (1899 – 1961).

People are running away from enemy soldiers, while the old man is saddened by the fate of the creatures left in his care. With the attack imminent, they seemed to be doomed. The old man is so burdened by sorrow that he does not even think of himself. He has no politics, no rivalry with anyone and is a symbol of the many civilians who are victims of war by circumstances.

Answer:

I assume the Question given is on the story"The Old Man at The Bridge"

Explanation:

The people of Spain have lost their homes, left their livestock and family pets for the sake of war. They were unable to carry personal belongings such as clothes, jewellery, vehicles etc. Due to war people are hungry without food, exhausted without rest and travelling without shoes. I believe that war is dangerous for all.
