The one thing that is common to all fossil fuels is that they: (b) Contain carbon.

What are fossil fuels and how they are formed?

  • Fossil fuels are the fuels that were formed when the remains of various plants and animals were buried millions of years ago.
  • Due to various geological processes such as heat and pressure, the remains of living organisms get converted into fuels. As they are formed from fossils, they are called fossil fuels. Examples are coal, petroleum, natural gas etc.
  • As it takes millions of years for the formation of fossil fuels, so, they are considered non-renewable sources of energy.
  • All fossil fuels contain some amount of carbon and when they are burnt, they release carbon dioxide. Hence, they are one of the sources of the greenhouse effect.

Note:

With the increasing population, the demands for these fuels are increasing while their sources are limited. So, these fuels can exhaust soon. Hence, we should judiciously use these exhaustible resources.
