The early game of

cricket reflected the nature of the English society. The early game of

cricket reflected the nature of the English society. The rich people who

played the game for pleasure were known as amateurs. The poor people

who played it for earning a living were known as professionals. The

latter were paid money mostly by the patrons of the game.

While the amateurs

were known as gentlemen, the professionals were known as players.

Amateurs tended to be batsmen while the professionals were involved in

most of the hardworking aspects of the game like the fast bowling. This

is perhaps the reason that the laws of the game always favoured the

batsmen. The captain was also selected amongst the batsmen as most of

the amateurs were batsmen.

In many English schools like the Eton, the team games of cricket and rugby were seen as not just mere outdoor games but an efficient way of teaching discipline, codes of honour and acts of social services.
