Given : all possible outcomes when four fair coins are flipped.

To find : probability that at least three coins land facing tails up

Solution:

Sample Space

= { HHHH ,  HHHT, HTHH , HHTT , HHTH , HTHT , HTTH , HTTT , TTTT , TTTH ,THTT, TTHH ,TTHT ,THTH, THHT ,THHH}

n(S) = 16

at least three coins land facing tails up = 3 Tails  up + 4 Tailsup

E = { HTTT , TTTT , TTTH ,THTT,  TTHT    }

n(E)  = 5

Probability (at least three tails) = n(E)/n(S)  =  5/16

probability  = 3 Tail  + 4 Tails

= ⁴C₃(1/2)(1/2)³  + ⁴C₄(1/2)⁰(1/2)⁴

= 4 (1/16) + 1/16

= 5/16

probability that at least three coins land facing tails up = 5/16

P(at least three tails) =   5/16
