Rectifier: A device used to convert oscillating AC wave into unidirectional DC wave.

Rectifiers are mainly of two types:

  • Half-wave rectifier: This type of rectifier converts only half-wave of the AC. It used only a single diode.
  • Full-wave rectifier: This type of rectifier converts full-wave of the AC. It used two diodes.

Principle of Rectifier:

  • During the positive cycle, the diode D1 is forward biased and the diode D2 is reverse biased.
  • During the negative cycle, the diode D1 is reverse biased and the diode D2 is forward biased.
  • This allows the whole AC wave to be converted into DC wave.

Capacitors and Inductors are also added to rectifiers to improve fluctuating waves.
