1.So4 atoms almost always -2, therefore the counter ions (So4) give a net charge of -2.

2.Given the answer to (1.) we know [ CO(NH3)5Br] must have a +2 charge

All five NH3 ligands are neutral and the remaining

Br is +1, so Co must have an oxidation number of +1.

Summary

5 x NH3 → 0

1 x So4 → -2

1 x Co → +1

Gives the complex ion [Co(NH3)5Br] → +2

the oxidation state of cobalt have +1
