Non-metals react with oxygen to form non-metal oxides. Non-metal oxides are acidic in nature. They turn blue litmus to red. Sulphurous acid turns blue litmus to red showing it is an acid and that sulphur dioxide is acidic in nature.

Non metals react with oxygen to form acidic oxides or neutral oxides. For example S+ O2 = SO2 which is an acidic oxide. Which when react with water form sulphuric acid. Similarly when Carbon react with with one molecule of Oxygen i.e. C+O = CO (carbon monoxide) which is a neutral oxide.

While carbon dioxide also forms by the reaction of Carbon and two molecules of Oxygen which is an acidic oxide.
