The pace of advancement in the urban settlement is faster as compared to the rural settlement, but it comes at a cost because urban areas cost you much but gives you all the benefits of modern life.

The pace of advancement is definitely greater in urban areas, but the nation, society and individuals all end up paying a high price for it.  Since urban areas are more developed, there is a huge influx of people to such cities. People from villages and small towns flock to bigger cities in search of work. There are lots of opportunities, no doubt, but there are also many demerits that cannot completely be ignored.

To begin with, urban areas are highly populated. In fact it won’t be wrong to say that these cities are over-populated. As a result, resources are not freely available. For example, water shortages are common. The common man does not even have access to clean air to breathe in.

Also, the quality of is greatly affected because of lack of space. Land prices are very high in all of India’s leading cities. So, living quarters are not as spacious as they would have been on the outskirts or in the rural set-up. Similarly, travel time is unnecessarily long, even for short distances. This leads to more time wasted on travel and leaves one tired and with little time to do other work.

From a societal perspective, as the youth move to cities, they leave their elders back home in villages. The seniors then begin to lead a life of neglect since there is no one to look after them. It has also amounted to traditional arts and crafts dying out because the next generation is not present in the villages to learn the arts.

The cost is the greatest when it comes to the national level. The government has to handle high levels of pollution caused due to high population density. Also, the destruction to life is a lot higher in crowded cities during natural disasters. A lot of the taxpayers’ money is utilised to build and maintain the infrastructure of the urban areas, while the rural areas suffer quietly in neglect.

The pace of urban development thus affects the common man, society and even the nation as a whole.
