The gomashtas were the paid servants of the English East India Company. They were appointed by the British in the colonies as their agents. The gomashtas signed bonds with the weavers and artisans on behalf of the Company. They compelled the local craftsmen to sell their goods to the British at the prices fixed by them.

The mamlatdars were appointed to look after the collection of revenue in the districts. They worked under the British officers. They also maintained the law and order in the area. They were paid a regular monthly salary Rs. 70 to Rs. 150.
