The paid servants of the English East India Company were called the gomashtas. They acted as the agents of the British in their colonies. They would sign bonds with the local artisans and weavers and compel them to sell their goods to the British at the prices fixed by them.

In the districts the mamlatdars were paid a monthly salary of Rs. 70 to Rs. 150. They were in charge of collecting the revenue and looking after the law and order in the area. They worked under the British officers.
