The Painted Ceiling

Summary of the Poem

Stanza 1-2

 The poem starts with a description of an innocent child who is living in her grandpa’s house which she describes as “wonderful”. The house has many windows, doors and stairs which go up and down. The house has very slippery floors. Among all rooms, which include her Mother’s, her own, the library, parlour, etc, she loves the green dining room.

 Stanza 3-4

 In this special room, the ceiling is very round in shape. She finds it attractive and beautiful as she sees apples and pears fall through, but the fact that she doesn’t realize that the ceiling is painted, is the main part of the poem. Grapes, melons, pineapples also seem to be falling. She thinks that they will never fall down, because she had stood under them for a long time. She keeps her mouth open in case a cherry or some fruit falls down.

 Stanza 5-6

 She runs there under the painted ceiling early in the morning to see if they have fallen on the ground but they are still falling from the ceiling. She also visits there at night, and sees the same thing, just by the candle-light. She is convinced that the fruits have magical powers and each one has a different power. While one can make you see or hear abnormal things, the other can make you invisible. But alas, she may never know this for sure.

 Stanza 7-8

 Now, as the girl is very eager to take the fruits, she tries to use a ladder, yet she feels that it is very heavy to lift and the chairs are just not as tall as she needs. She has finally given up hope, and thinks that her life shall end without knowing the secret of the fruits. She feels sad and depressed, because when you are near adventures and they start to begin, you find some difficulty to stop you. In this girl’s case, she is unable to reach the fruits because of her short height.
