The pair of elements showing diagonal relationship are Li and Mg.

* Diagonal relationship exists between certain pairs of elements which are located diagonally in the modern periodic table.

* This is observed in the elements of the second and third periods of the periodic table only.

* This is due to the presence of similar properties of elements.

The similarities observed between lithium( Li) and Magnesium( Mg) are:

1. Electropositive nature

2. Polarisation behaviour of ion

3. Similar chemical properties.

The pair of elements showing diagonal relationship are :--

Option (d) Li and Mg.

The similarity in properties of elements present diagonally is known as diagonal relationship. Members of second period shows similar properties with elements of third period of next group.

The relationship is due to similar polarizing power of elements arranged diagonally. We know that across period electronegative nature increases and down the group electropositive nature so they counter balance each other and thus similarity in properties.

The similarity is also due to same charge/ radius ratio which is also the measure of polarizing ability and both third and second period there is absence of d subshells this result in similar properties and hence establishing diagonal relationship.

Examples are:- Lithium and Magnesium, Boron and silicon etc.
