The parallel sides of a trapezium are 20 cm and 10 cm. its non parallel sides are both equals each being 13 cm. find the area of the trapezium

We divide the trapezium into 3 parts - 2 triangles and a rectangle.

base of triangle = (20-10)/2

                = 5

height of triangle as well as rectangle^2 = 13^2 - 5^2

height^2 = 144

height = 12

area of trapezium = (1/2)(sum of parallel sides)(height)

                 = (1/2)(10+20)(12)

                 = 180 cm square
