The parallel sides of a trapezium are 46cm and 25cm. Its non- parallel sides are 20cm and 13 cm. Find the distance between the parallel sides and the area of the trapezium.

In the ΔCAP

h²=20²-x²......(1)

in ΔDBQ

h²=13²-y²...............(2)

20²-x²=13²-y².

400-169=x²- y².

but x+y=AB-CD=46-25=21

y=21-x

so x²-(21-x)²=231

x²-(441-42x+x²)=231

-441+42x=231

42x=672

x=672/42=16

from(1)

h²=400-16²=400-256=144

h=12

the distance between the parallel sides=12 cm

so the area=(46+25)*12/2

=6*71

area=426 cm²
