Explanation:

Good Timber’ is one of Douglas Malloch’s most popular poems. It focuses on subject matter and themes that are frequently a part of his work. He wrote about the woods, lumberjacks, and adventure stories. This imagery is all present in ‘Good Timber’. Throughout the poem, Malloch uses simple language, diction, and standard syntax in order to get his main points across. The poem is meant to be accessible to all readers. This makes a great deal of sense as the themes at the heart of the poem apply to all people, no matter who they are or where they’re from.

SUMMARY OF THE POEM

Good Timber’ by Douglas Malloch is a simple, fairly short poem that uses an extended metaphor to speak about how strength is gained through struggle. The poem begins with the speaker comparing the tree that “never” had to fight for space, air, or nutrients to the one that knows this struggle and has become stronger because of it. The former never became a “forest king” and instead died “a scrubby thing”. The latter on the other hand suffered storms and survived them. Malloch makes it very clear that he’s using these trees as a metaphor for “men” and how one gains real resolve in life.

Answer:

Good Timber was written by Malloch. He expresses sacrifice, struggle and nature in his poem. The first stanza begins with the comparison between human and tree. There are two types of tree. Likewise there are two types of people. The trees which give everything like shelter, food, etc., to others without thinking about how they will get the food for tomorrow. Like there are people who give everything to others, without thinking about the future. The second type of tree are those which struggles to live. Which has scars and broken branches. They struggled to survive through the hard and wild storms. Like this there are people who struggle to live. Those kind of trees wil become good timber. Likewise those type of people will become great humans.
