The part of alimentary canal that lies mainly in thorax and is associated with process deglutition is OESOPHAGUS. It opens into the STOMACH in the abdomen.

Detailed discussion:

  • Whenever food is taken into the mouth the muscles of mastication are activated resulting into chewing of food into small pieces and formation of bolus.

  • When bolus is formed the pharyngeal muscles stimulated resulting into swallowing and deglutition.

  • From the pharynx (situated in throat), the food passes down into the oesophagus which in turn passes into the stomach.

Few info about esophagus:

  • Esophageal mucosa has Non-keratinised Stratified Squamous Epithelium.

  • The gastro-esophageal junction has a lower esophageal sphincter, which prevents regurgitation.
