For promotion to the high grades you need to pass for all main subjects. The main subjects depends on the stream or boards. For example.. For 10th standard, the main subjects to be passed is Hindi and English.. but in 11th if you opt for science the main subject will be science. So it depends like this.

Apart from this, you need to achieve 33% in total to get promoted to the next class.
