Regret and inspiration are two diametrically opposite things. Our attitude and outlook to life determines which of the two will determine our further actions or thinking.
Regret is the outcome of pessimism, whereas inspiration is the by-product of optimism.
In the two chapters, The Portrait of a Lady and The Photograph are about the past. The Portrait of a Lady is the story of grandmother’s strength of character; it inspires us. The Photograph is about sadness, regret and loss. The poet is sad about her mother’s death.
So, we see the past can be both a source of inspiration, as shown in the chapter The Portrait of a Lady; the past can also be a source of regret, as shown in the poem The Photograph.
