The peasants used to pay heavy land taxes.

They were forced by British to play large sum of revenue money may be by tax or production or seeds anything this was during British Raj in India this was also known as Zamindari System where all the peasants who used to work in the land of the zamindars also known as land lord and the peasants were bound to pay large taxes to this land lords and that tax used to go to the locker of the British government ruling India.

And if they failed to pay they were tortured to death.

Answer:

When the government found that it had spent a lot of money in paying compensation, it made a rule that the peasants would be given their land only if they paid some price for it. ... Those peasants who could pay, became the owners of their land and were freed from the burden of the zamindari system.

hope it helps you.. . .

have a great day.. .

thanks
