The peasant uprising among the the Munda community of Ranchi district dates back to the tribal rebellion in 1899. It is one of the most important rebellions that we have before the battle of 1857.   Birsa Munda, a tribal young man led this movement in the area south of Ranchi in 1899-1900. However, this great soul Birsa  was arrested by British police and he died in jail in the year 1900. It was announced on the part of the colonizers and the British officials that he died of cholera in jail.
