The peddler had been thinking about his rattraps when all of a sudden he was struck by the possibility that the entire world was only a major rattrap. It existed just to set lures for individuals.

It offered wealth and delights, safe house and sustenance, warmth and dress in indistinguishable way from the rattrap offered cheddar and pork. When somebody let himself be enticed to contact the snare, it surrounded him, and afterward everything arrived at an end.

Answer:

This is a question from the chapter The Rattrap written by Selma Lagerlof.

The peddler believed the whole world to be rattrap and the riches, luxury and comfort are baits to trap people in the rattrap. He compared the meat and cheese with that riches and luxury and regarded them as baits to catch Greedy human beings similar to that of rats.

Once when the crofter had gone to sell his cow's milk in the creamery, the peddler took the savings of the crofter ( 30 kuronas ) and started to leave the cottage. In the fear of getting caught, he avoided the highway and used the woods for escaping thinking that he made a smart move. But, as the sunlight began to fade, he realized that he was lost and was just walking the same path which he covered earlier.

Thus in this situation, he compared himself with the rat trapped in the woods (Rattrap) due to the bait of 30 kuronas.
