The rat trap peddler always though ill about the world and because of his condition, was forced to do petty thievery. When he was allowed to stay in the house of the old man, who was very kind to him. The peddler took advantage of his confidences and stole his money.  

But later, when he was at the Ironmaster's house, he was surprised to see how Edla even after knowing he was a thief allowed him to stay and even argued with her dad. This had a huge impact on the peddler. It was because of Edla that the peddler was raised to a Captiam from a thief and this is the reason why he did not steal the second time.
