People prefer staying in plains of a river since plains are very fertile and so, farmers can grow good quality of crops and earn good money.Thats why plains are most densely populated areas in the world.Also,the vegetation,flora and fauna is beautiful near plains :)

people prefer to live on plain rather than mountains and plateaus because these are suitable for farming,natural sources such as coal,gemstones, cemet etc and predictability of water too
