Factors like climate; socio economic status of the region like metropolitan, urban, rural etc.,; house-hold classification like rich, poor, very poor; food habits; level and type of development -public water supply, sewerage system, etc.,; and physiology determine the requirement of water. Bureau of Indian Standards, IS:1172-1993, recommends minimum water supply in litres per capita per day (lpcd) for domestic consumption. Various agencies recommend different quantities of requirement of water for domestic use. It is important to note that the quantity of water consumed in most of the Indian cities is not determined by the demand but the supply.

The water consumption also depends on the duration of water supply in a given area and also the distance of source of water to the house-holds. The rate of consumption also depends on the multi-source possibility like house connections of municipal tat water, community tap water, river water, well water (private or public), etc.

Some household activities, like washing clothes, bathing, use in toilets, and washing dishes and utensils are the most intensive water consuming activities and any error in quantifying water requirement for these activities will end up in the erroneous results (under or over estimates).
