The percentage composition of coal is C = 89%, O = 4%, N = 0.5%, S = 1%. Calculate HCV and percentage of hydrogen of the coal sample.

I guess the question is wrong as their is no wt of fuel sample is given and also it also missing value of ncv

H = 5.5 %

HCV = 8938 kcal/kg

◆ Explanation -

Percentage of all other elements is given, so remaining is hydrogen.

H = 100 - (C + O + N + S)

H = 100 - (89 + 4 + 0.5 + 1)

H = 5.5 %

By Dulongs formula, HCV can be calculated as -

HCV = 1/100 × (8080C + 34500H + 2240S - 4312O)

HCV = 1/100 × (8080×89 + 34500×5.5 + 2240×1 - 4312×4)

HCV = 8938 kcal/kg
