Let the length of equal sides be a

Base = 2/3 ( a + a)

= 2 (2a) / 3

= 4a/3

Perimeter = a + a + 4a/3

=> 40 = 2a + 4a/ 3

=> 40 = 10a/ 3

=> a = 40 × 3 / 10

=> a = 12

Base = 16 cm

Length of each Equal side = 12 cm

Let the equal sides be x.

Given,

Perimeter =40cm

A/Q,

Base = 2/3(x+x)

= 2/3×2x

=4/3x

Now,

We know that,

Perimeter of an isoceles triangle =2a+b

40cm = 2x + 4/3x

40 = 6x+4x/3

40 = 10/3x

x = 40×3/10

therefore,

x= 4×3

= 12 cm.

So,

Length of its equal sides = x =12 cm.....
