Let the length and breadth of the rectangle be L and B.

2(L+B) = 40, or

L + B = 20, or

B = 20-L …(1)

LB = 96 …(2). Put value of B from (1) in (2), to get

L(20-L) = 96, or

20L - L^2 = 96, or

L^2–20L+96 = 0

(L-12)(L-8) = 0, or

L = 12 or 8 (not acceptable), while B = 8 or 12 (not acceptable)

Length is 12 cm and breadth is 8 cm.
