The Peshwa Bhaji Rao entered into the Subsidiary Alliance in the British in order to get the Company's protection against the Yashwant Rao Holkar who belonged to the subordinate feudatory Holkar dynasty of the Maratha Empires.

After the First Anglo-Maratha War, there were struggle for power among the Maratha fuedatories and other chiefs. When the Holker reached to the sight of Poona, Bhaji Rao II went to Baissen and entered into subsidiary alliance with the Company.
