When in the presence of the apical bud the growth of the lateral bud is inhibited, this phenomenon is called as apical dominance.
Apical dominance can be counteracted by spraying cytokinin on the plants. Also by decapitation(removing the apical bud), the growth of lateral buds can be promoted.
