For benzene I do it this way: in some of the videos about hybrid orbitals, there are pictures of what sigma bonds and pi bonds look like in space. In the resonance Lewis structures, this shows up as drawing the 3 double bonds. But in the hybrid, these 3 pairs of electrons are spread out between the 6 pi bond orbitals.
