when the pond freezes over the ice rises to the surface creating a layer of ice which blocks the oxygen from diffusing into the water therefore the Oxygen levels drop drastically in the water causing death of the goldfish even if they did survive the 0 degree Celsius temperature they would be suffocated to death due to lack of oxygen in the water.
