The pilot wanted thank the other pilot after his safe landing because if the other pilot wouldn't help him to come out of the storm he would lost because he couldn't see anything see because everything was black outside, compass was broken and instrument were not working and even the radio was dead. and if the other pilot didn't say him to follow he couldn't reach the Paris safely that is why he wanted to thank him.
