The pitch of a screw is 1 mm and the circular scale has 100 divisions. In measuring the diameter of a wire, pitch scale reads 4 mm and 74th division of the circular scale coincides with the base line of the main scale, find the following: i) least count of a screw gauge ii) observed reading iii) correct reading if the instrument has a positive zero error of 36 divisions iv) what is the radius of a wire?

ANSWER

L.C. of the screw gauge =

Numberofdivisionsoncircularscale

Pitch

=

100

1

=0.01mm

Given : Main scale reading =1 mm

Circular scale reading =0.01×47=0.47

∴ Diameter of wire = Total reading =1.47mm=0.147cm

Curved surface area = π×dl=π×(0.147)(5.6=2.58≈2.6cm
