It is quite true the play highlights both pessimism and optimism. Pessimism we see in Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Jordan’s attitude towards their father. They easily assumed him to be dead; and appeared to be more concerned about dividing his property and things between themselves; neither of them cared to send for a doctor.
Optimism we see in Abel Merryweather’s response to her selfish daughters. He quickly understands the situation after coming to senses. He shocks them by announcing to them his future plans which include marrying Mrs. John Shorrocks.
