In the poem "The fire and The Ice", Robert Frost presents two of the darkest traits of humanity:- the capacity to be consumed by desire and the capacity to hate.

The poet says the human desire is enough to destroy the earth. Desire propels in hot pursuit of achieving something hence its compared with fire in this poem. Desire and greed grows as they get more. These are the things which affects our ability to think clearly.

The coldness of ice numbs our senses, similarly the coldness of our heart can numb our feelings, thus hatred in this poem is compared with ice. The results of hate is always bitter. Hatred is something that grows without someone's knowledge. Once hatred is created in human's heart, then that person becomes inhuman and loses control over all his emotions. According to the poet can also lead to the destruction of the world.

In this poem, Robert Frost cautions all common man that man shouldn't forget the bitter reality of life, that's death is inevitable.
