Dear Saurabh:
I hope this letter finds you in vibrant health and high spirits. I am writing this letter to share with you my views about a poem that I recently read a few days ago. The poem has left me disturbed. The poem was ‘The Frog and the Nightingale’ by Vikram Seth. The poem deals with the theme of exploitation of new talented artists by shrewd and cunning people who have some influence in the society.
In this poem the nightingale that is exceptionally gifted is exploited and shrewdly gotten rid of by the evil frog. The advent of the nightingale at the Bog eclipses her career as a singer and musician. He begins considering her as her rival and makes schemes to get rid of her. The cunning and shrewd frog assesses the naivety of the nightingale. Though exceptionally talented, she lacks street- smartness. The frog tries to take advantage of that. He develops a two-pronged strategy to destroy her. Firstly, by constantly discouraging her; and secondly, by giving her faulty training. In the name of faulty training he not only ruins her natural singing technique, but also earns lots of money from the audience who come to enjoy her songs. The poor nightingale fails to see through the frog's wicked plan, and ultimately dies.
I really felt sorry for the poor bird. I just fail to understand why God allows cunning and villainous creatures, like the frog to have influence in the society at all. Why does God not punish villains like him; and why does He allow innocent creatures like the nightingale fall prey to evil traps. Kindly do give your views. The rest is fine. give regards to uncle and aunt.
Yours affectionately,
