The Garden City
Here Sam O. Nwojigba portrays a pathetic picture of Port Harcourt, Nigeria which is known as 'The Garden City'.
The title of the poem acknowledges that the city is made of garden but the real fact is that it is without flowers and fragrance. The city is overcrowded and noisy. The poet has shown wide economic differences. Few of them are rich. The children are badly dressed and most of the people do hard work to get some foods. It is a poem about feelingless people and extreme poverty. The poet feels uneasy in this city. 'The Garden City' has lost its beauty and they are the cause of their downfall.
The garden city:
Sonnet Garden City describes that the people there are so busy with life that they do not have the opportunity to see nature at the "building expression" that most people do not. After visiting a place called the Garden. In love, the speaker sees what the person has never seen. Another sanctuary is in the middle of the nursery, where the speaker plays on the grass.
Examining the prayer house, the speaker sees that the doors are closed. At the entrance, the forbidden message is "not thought." At that point the speaker thinks back towards the nursery full of wonderful flowers.
Currently, however, the nursery is filled with graves. Where flowers grow, the speaker now finds only graves. At that moment the speaker sees the ministers praying, dressed in black, wandering in the nursery. The speaker said these clergymen are using thorny branches to pursue their “pleasure and desire”.
