The poem is based on the traditional Christian concept of sin and punishment. An albatross appeared on the ship and brought good luck to the mariners. When it arrived, the iceburgs split and a favourable wind began to blow. The ship moved out of the fog and mist. Then one day the old mariner killed the albatross for no reason. The sailors thought that the mariner had done an evil deed by killing the innocent bird. This evil deed brought untold sufferings and hardships to the mariner. They thought that the old mariner had commited a sin. The sin commited by the Mariner brought woes and despair to the mariners. The ship got stuck in the middle of the ocean. The sailors found it difficult to breathe. Their tongues became dry. There was water and water everywhere but none could drink a drop of it. They cursed the ancient Mariner for their suffering an punished him by hanging the dead albatross around the neck. They thought that this would keep reminding him for the sinful act that he did.

- the ancient mariner kills the albatross at an impulse for no reason the other sailors considered it as a sin as he had no right to take away a creatures life.
- as the punishment for this sin the sailors hang dead albatross in his neck instead cross
- thus the poem invokes sin and redemption....
