Answer: In " On Killing a Tree" Gieve Patel talks about the killing of a tree in an ironical tone to leave message that trees should be preserved. A tree anchors its roots in the soil and grows slowly consuming mineral from 'earth's crust'. It absorbs sunlight, air and water for years. But man's greed and cruelty annihilates trees. They pay no heed to their pain. The tree bleeds due to hacking and chopping of knife. Mother Nature prevents the killing of tree. From the bleeding bark grows curled green twigs to renew the cycle of life. The people kill the life giver through scorching, twisting, hardening and withering etc. The painful death of tree becomes a metaphor for suicide. Man actually paves the way for his own doom - irony lies here.
