Yes.  ‘The Slaves Dream’ by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is celebration of dignity and liberty. No master can deny his slave of his freedom to dream .As the sun beats heavily on his body, As the driver whips the slave the slave lies listlessly as his soul has fragmented away from the manacles of his body. Death lights his land of sleep as death has protected him from the despairs of life.

Explanation:

  • The poet defines the slave’s dying moment as lost in a dream. He reveries of his African home, envisages a life of gaiety and fun in the company of his people, and fantasies himself as a king. The sounds and sights of his native land and the free life he had once led amongst his folks are intensely remembered by the slave
  • The Slave’s Dream’ portrays the lost ambitions and dreams of a slave. The slave is captivated by the images of his family and native land. Holding in his hands his sickle, the slave lies on the ground, bare-breasted, coated with sand.
  • Along the stretch of scenery of his dreams, the river Niger flows majestically. He envisages himself to be a king, no more destined to the fetters of slavery, and free to do whatever he desires. He walks sublimely over the plains lined by palm trees. The slave is so empowered by his dream, that he visualises himself in a land where he is an individual not merely a slave.
  • The picture of his family bring tears to his eye. Like a king he rides his stallion in search of adventures. The hyena’s scream, the hippopotamus’ grunt, and lion’s roar, sound like a glorious roll of drums to his ears. The sound from the desert and the forest introduces ideas of liberty and wildness in his mind. As he finally gasps for his last breath, he beams in ‘tempestuous glee’.
