This poem is based on the christian concept of sin, redemption and punishment. At first the mariner commits sin of killing the innocent the innocent bird. Then he as well as the crew suffered from the harsh weather. They were stuck at extreme weathers like icy cold and hot like copper. This is punishment. So he reduces his pain by telling his tale, which is perhaps redemption.
