The extract is from the poem Song of the Open Road by Walt Whitman. The extract is only the first stanza of the entire poem. In the poem, the poet tells the reader how nice being outdoors, and being on the road is. The road is seen as the great equalizer that forces people from all walks of life, to associate with one another. The road is also a signifier of one's mobility from one place to another. If one has the will to leave all behind and venture on a journey upon the road to new places, they can find new things to learn. He himself, although lured by the places where he lives, refuses to stay there for long. Whitman also juxtaposes life on the road to that indoors and claims how suffocating and stagnant it is.
This is an allegorical poem that Whitman wrote equating open roads to American democracy which is bound to make for a good society.
