the poet refers to dying fire here because of the lack in fuel of wood that's nearly going to end and the 6 humans were not refueling it in despite of taking revenge from others. They were scattered by happenstance.

Answer:

the poet refers to the fire which was going to vanish soon around whom the six humans were sitting because they had nothing to keep them alive except the fire which was burning in bleak and bitter cold.
