the poet commented that the death was not due to the cold outside, it was the cold within their hearts that killed them.

Answer:

From the statement, 'died from the cold within', the poet means to say that the six humans who were trapped in the bitter cold had died due to the vices that were in them.

Each one of the six humans possessed a stick of wood but none was willing to give his/her stick of wood to the diminishing fire due to the vices that were in them in the fear that it would benefit somebody else too.

If only they had given their stick to the diminishing fire, they would not have had frozen to death. It was their vices (the cold within) that prevented them in giving their stick of wood to the fire which resulted in them being frozen to death.
